Coco-Glucoside: The Gentle, Plant-Derived Cleanser in Our Washes

Cleansers have a tricky job: remove oil and dirt without stripping the skin. The cleansing ingredient you choose makes a big difference, and coco-glucoside is one of the gentlest.

What Is Coco-Glucoside?

Coco-Glucoside is a surfactant (a cleansing agent) made from coconut-derived fatty alcohols and glucose from plant sugars. It belongs to the alkyl glucoside family, which also includes decyl and lauryl glucoside.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review expert panel, in its 2013 safety assessment published in the International Journal of Toxicology, concluded that alkyl glucosides are safe as used in cosmetics when formulated to be non-irritating. Alkyl glucosides are also readily biodegradable.

What It Does

Cleanses gently. Coco-glucoside lifts oil and dirt so they rinse away with water.

Creates a soft lather. It produces a creamy foam that feels pleasant without harshness.

Respects the moisture barrier. A 2004 review in Dermatologic Therapy explains how harsher surfactants can disrupt skin proteins and lipids, and how milder cleansing systems help reduce that effect. Glucosides are a common choice for mild formulas.

Where You'll Find It at True Colour Beauty

For face, coco-glucoside is in the Purifying Mousse Cleanser, the Aloe Refresh Facial Wash, the Clarifying Gel Cleanser and the Blemish Care Purifying Face Wash.

For hair and body, find it in the Sensitive Scalp Shampoo, True Gloss Shampoo, Daily Body Wash and the Soft Start Baby Shampoo. Browse all Cleansers.

How to Use It

Lather with water, massage gently and rinse thoroughly. Gentle cleansers like these suit twice-daily use.

What the Research Doesn't Say

Mildness depends on the whole formula, including other cleansers, pH and conditioning ingredients. Coco-glucoside is a strong start, not the whole story.
