Hydrolyzed Keratin: Smoother, Stronger-Looking Hair From Its Own Building Block

Keratin is the protein hair is made of. So when hair feels weak, rough or frizzy, a keratin-based product can make a visible difference.

What Is Hydrolyzed Keratin?

Hydrolyzed Keratin is keratin protein that has been broken into smaller fragments. Those fragments are small enough to attach to the hair surface, and the smallest can move into the outer layers of the hair fiber.

A 2021 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science tested hydrolyzed keratins of different molecular weights on textured hair. It found that lower-weight keratin moved further into the fiber, and that keratin treatments improved measures such as strength and resistance to breakage.

Note that this is a conditioning ingredient. It is different from salon "keratin treatments", which are chemical smoothing services.

What It Does for Hair

Helps hair feel stronger. Keratin fragments fill in weak spots, helping reduce the look of breakage.

Smooths the surface. A smoother cuticle means less frizz and more shine.

Supports elasticity and body. Well-conditioned hair bends rather than snaps, and fine hair can look fuller.

Where You'll Find It at True Colour Beauty

The keratin range is built around it: the Keratin Volume Boost Shampoo, Keratin Volume Boost Conditioner, Keratin Intensive Rescue Hair Mask and Keratin Shine Leave-In Hair Mist.

It also appears in the Deep Cleanse Scalp Scrub – Rosemary & Mint.

How to Use It

Use the shampoo and conditioner regularly, add the mask once or twice a week, and mist the leave-in onto damp or dry lengths for extra smoothness and shine.

What the Research Doesn't Say

Protein care improves hair's look and feel while you use it. It doesn't permanently rebuild damaged hair, and split ends still need a trim.
