Lip Oil Three Ways: Sheer, Glossy Ombré and Glazed Matte

Lip oil is one of the most versatile products in your bag. On its own it gives a sheer tint and soft shine; layered with liner or lipstick it changes the whole finish. Here are three ways to wear our Hydrating Lip Oils.

What you'll need

Look 1: Sheer, everyday tint

Step 1: Start with bare, smooth lips

Lip oil looks best on smooth lips. If they feel dry, apply lip butter the night before.

Step 2: Apply from the center

Swipe Hydrating Lip Oil in Sheer Hot Pink or Sheer Red across the center of both lips, then press your lips together to spread it. Done. It's the easiest no-mirror lip look.

Look 2: Glossy ombré with liner

Step 1: Line slightly deeper

Outline your lips with a liner one or two shades deeper than your natural color, such as Lip Liner Pencil in Sable Brown or Coffee.

Step 2: Smudge inwards

Lightly shade the outer third of your lips with liner and blur the inner edge with your fingertip so there is no harsh line.

Step 3: Top with oil

Apply Hydrating Lip Oil in Unbutton or Glass Slipper over the whole lip. The deeper edge and glossy center make lips look fuller.

Look 3: Glazed matte

Step 1: Apply a matte base

Apply one thin layer of Liquid to Matte Lipstick and let it set completely, which takes about a minute.

Step 2: Glaze the center only

Dab Hydrating Lip Oil in Love Letter just on the center of your lips. You keep the color payoff of matte with a modern, glassy shine, and the oil keeps lips comfortable.

Quick questions

Is lip oil the same as lip gloss?

Not quite. Lip oil feels lighter and less sticky, with a sheer tint. For more shine and color, try True Shine Lip Gloss.

Will lip oil make my matte lipstick slide?

If you apply it to the center only after the matte layer has fully set, it stays put and the edges stay crisp.
