Peppermint Oil and Leaf Extract: The Cooling Refresh Your Scalp Loves

Few ingredients announce themselves like peppermint. That cool, tingly feeling on the scalp is a big part of why people love it in hair care.

What Is Peppermint Oil and Leaf Extract?

Our peppermint comes from Mentha Piperita, used both as an essential oil distilled from the leaves and as a leaf extract. It is sourced from organic farming.

Peppermint oil's signature compound is menthol. A classic 1994 review in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology explains that menthol creates its cooling sensation by acting on the cold-sensing receptors in skin, not by actually lowering skin temperature.

What It Does for the Scalp

Refreshes and invigorates. Menthol's cooling effect leaves the scalp feeling fresh and awake.

Supports a clean, balanced feel. Peppermint's fresh character makes it a natural fit in clarifying and scalp-focused formulas.

Adds a fresh scent. It gives products a clean, minty aroma.

About Peppermint and Hair Growth

A 2014 study in Toxicological Research found that a 3% peppermint oil preparation encouraged hair growth in mice. It is an animal study, and results in mice do not reliably predict results in people. We include peppermint for its refreshing feel, not as a hair-growth ingredient.

Where You'll Find It at True Colour Beauty

Peppermint is in the Deep Cleanse Scalp Scrub – Rosemary & Mint, the Keratin Volume Boost Shampoo and the Keratin Volume Boost Conditioner.

How to Use It

Massage into the scalp and rinse well. Keep peppermint products away from your eyes. A cool tingle is normal; burning or redness is not, so rinse and stop using the product if that happens.
