Rosehip Fruit Oil: Essential Fatty Acids for Radiant-Looking Skin

Rosehip oil has earned a loyal following, and its fatty acid and carotenoid content explains why.

What Is Rosehip Fruit Oil?

Rosehip oil is pressed from the fruit and seeds of the dog rose, Rosa Canina. In our formulas it is sourced from organic farming and cold-pressed.

It is rich in the essential fatty acids linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), and its natural golden-orange color comes from carotenoids, including beta-carotene.

What It Does for Skin

Nourishes. Linoleic acid is a key part of the skin barrier's lipids, and a 2017 review of plant oils in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences links linoleic-rich oils with supporting barrier function.

Supports radiance. Carotenoids are antioxidants. Together with the oil's fatty acids, they help skin look brighter and more even.

Helps skin look smoother. A 2015 clinical study in Clinical Interventions in Aging found that people taking a standardized rosehip powder by mouth for eight weeks showed improvements in the look of wrinkles, moisture and elasticity. That study was oral, not topical, but it adds to interest in rosehip's compounds for skin.

Where You'll Find It at True Colour Beauty

The All-In-One Facial Oil and the Natural Retinol Alternative Oil Serum include rosehip in their oil blends.

It also appears in the Vitamin C Serum, the Retinol Alternative Serum, the Omega Comfort Body Oil and the Soft Skin Body Serum.

How to Use It

Apply a few drops of a rosehip-containing oil as the last step of your evening routine, or press it over moisturizer. Use serums as directed. Store oils away from heat and light, since linoleic-rich oils are more delicate.

What the Research Doesn't Say

Rosehip oil is sometimes described as natural retinol. It contains only very small amounts of vitamin A-related compounds and should not be thought of as a retinoid. Its value is nourishment and radiance.
