Rosemary Leaf Oil: What It Does for Your Scalp, and What the Research Really Says

Rosemary oil has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in hair care. Here's what is behind the buzz, and what the evidence actually shows.

What Is Rosemary Leaf Oil?

Rosemary Leaf Oil is distilled from the leaves of Rosmarinus Officinalis. In our formulas it is sourced from organic farming.

A 2019 review in the Journal of Biomedical Science describes rosemary as rich in compounds such as 1,8-cineole, camphor, carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid, with well-documented antioxidant activity.

What It Does

Refreshes the scalp. Rosemary has a clean, herbal scent and a stimulating feel that helps the scalp feel fresh.

Supports a healthy-feeling scalp. Its antioxidant compounds help keep the scalp in good condition, which supports fuller, healthier-looking hair.

Adds antioxidant support to skincare. Rosemary's antioxidants also help protect formulas and skin from everyday stress.

About the Rosemary Study You May Have Heard Of

A 2015 study in Skinmed compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil in 100 adults with androgenetic hair thinning over six months. Both groups saw a similar increase in hair count at six months, and the rosemary group reported less scalp itching. It is one small study, in a specific group of people, using a specific preparation. It is interesting, but it does not show that every rosemary product will change hair growth.

Where You'll Find It at True Colour Beauty

For hair and scalp, rosemary is in the Keratin Volume Boost Shampoo, the Keratin Volume Boost Conditioner and the Deep Cleanse Scalp Scrub – Rosemary & Mint.

It also appears in the Lash Conditioning Serum, the Kojic Acid Dark Spot Serum and the Lavender & Rosemary Natural Soap.

How to Use It

Massage shampoo into the scalp for a minute before rinsing, and use the scrub once a week. Avoid contact with eyes. Undiluted essential oils can irritate skin, so use rosemary in finished products rather than straight from the bottle.
