How to Double Cleanse (and Who Should Do It)

Double cleansing simply means cleansing twice in the evening: first to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and excess oil, then to clean the skin itself. It's especially useful if you wear long-wearing makeup, mascara or sunscreen every day.

The tutorial

Step 1: First cleanse: dissolve makeup

Shake BiPhasic Make-up Remover to mix its two layers, soak a cotton pad and hold it on closed eyes for 10 seconds before wiping gently. Repeat over the face. For a lighter option, use Micellar Cleansing Water.

Step 2: Second cleanse: clean the skin

Massage a cleanser suited to your skin over damp skin for 30 to 60 seconds: Purifying Mousse Cleanser for oily skin, Aloe Refresh Facial Wash for normal to dry skin.

Step 3: Use a soft tool (optional)

A damp Bamboo Charcoal Konjac Sponge gives a gentle, soft cleanse without scrubbing.

Step 4: Rinse and pat dry

Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel. Then follow with toner, serum and moisturizer.

Who should double cleanse?

  • Yes: people who wear foundation, long-wear makeup or daily sunscreen.
  • Optional: bare-skin days. One gentle cleanse is enough.
  • Morning: a single cleanse, or just water for very dry skin, is plenty.

Quick questions

Will double cleansing dry out my skin?

Not if you use gentle products and lukewarm water. If skin feels tight, switch to a milder second cleanser.

Do I need to rinse micellar water?

It's a good idea to follow it with your regular cleanser in the evening, which is exactly what double cleansing is.
