Sea Buckthorn: The Omega-Rich Berry for Nourished, Radiant-Looking Skin

Sea buckthorn is a hardy shrub that grows in harsh, cold climates. Its bright orange berries are among the most nutrient-dense fruits used in skincare.

What Is Sea Buckthorn?

Sea Buckthorn comes from Hippophae Rhamnoides. In our formulas it is sourced from organic farming.

A 2017 review in Lipids in Health and Disease describes sea buckthorn oil as unusually rich in active compounds, including omega-3, omega-6 and omega-7 (palmitoleic acid) fatty acids, carotenoids, tocopherols (vitamin E) and phytosterols. Palmitoleic acid is relatively rare in plant oils and is also found naturally in skin's lipids.

What It Does for Skin

Nourishes. Its blend of fatty acids helps skin feel soft and comfortable and supports the skin's moisture barrier.

Supports a brighter look. Carotenoids give sea buckthorn its vivid color and act as antioxidants, helping skin look radiant.

Helps defend against everyday stress. Vitamin E and carotenoids help protect skin from environmental stressors.

Where You'll Find It at True Colour Beauty

The Nourishing Facial Oil and All-In-One Facial Oil include it in their oil blends.

You'll also find it in the Vitamin C Serum, the Kojic Acid Dark Spot Serum, the Ceramide Night Cream and the Retinol Alternative Moisturizer.

How to Use It

Use as directed. Pure sea buckthorn oil is intensely orange and can tint skin, but in a finished formula it is blended at levels that don't.

What the Research Doesn't Say

Much of the research is on sea buckthorn oil's composition and on lab and animal studies. Human clinical studies of topical use are limited, so we focus on what is well established: it is a nutrient-rich, nourishing botanical.
