Dark spots are one of the most common skin concerns, and kojic acid is one of the best-known ingredients for them.
What Is Kojic Acid?
Kojic Acid is produced by fungi during fermentation, most famously by Aspergillus oryzae, the koji mold used to make sake, soy sauce and miso. Its discovery is often linked to observations about sake brewers' hands.
A 2019 review in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy explains that kojic acid works mainly by inhibiting tyrosinase, a key enzyme in the production of melanin (skin pigment). It also has antioxidant activity.
What It Does for Skin
Helps dark spots look less visible. By interfering with pigment production, kojic acid helps spots and patches look lighter over time.
Supports an even-looking tone. With regular use, skin tone looks more uniform and radiant.
Pairs well with other brighteners. Kojic acid is often combined with ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide and alpha-arbutin.
Where You'll Find It at True Colour Beauty
The kojic acid range includes the Kojic Acid Dark Spot Serum, the Kojic Acid Dark Spot Cream and the Kojic Acid Brightening Exfoliator. Browse the Kojic Acid collection.
How to Use It
Apply the serum after cleansing, follow with the cream, and use the exfoliator as directed. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day while using kojic acid. Sun exposure is the biggest driver of dark spots, and without sunscreen any brightening routine works against itself.
Kojic acid can irritate some skin types. Start slowly, patch test first, and stop use if you notice redness or a rash.
What the Research Doesn't Say
Results depend on concentration, formula and consistency, and brightening takes weeks to months. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel's 2010 safety assessment concluded that kojic acid is safe for use in cosmetics at concentrations up to 1%. It is a cosmetic brightener, not a treatment for skin conditions.
